Ra­dium jaw or ra­dium necrosis is a his­toric oc­cu­pa­tional dis­ease brought on by the in­ges­tion and sub­se­quent ab­sorp­tion of ra­dium into the bones of ra­dium dial painters. It also af­fected those con­sum­ing ra­dium-laden patent med­i­cines.

In 1925, Frances Splettscher died of radium poisoning after an agonizing illness. She developed severe anemia, and her teeth hurt. When a dentist pulled a tooth, part of her jaw came with it. Her mouth rotted until she had a hole in her check. Nowadays, most people know that radium products are incredibly harmful, and that radiation can kill you. However, this wasn't always the case.
